Wagging Tails and Rainy Trails
Muddy Paws and Pure Joy
The forest is different in the rain. Quieter. Softer. As if everything slows down for a moment. The mist dances between tree trunks, raindrops glisten on moss, and the world smells earthy and alive.
Nano trots ahead on the trail with a serious face, nose twitching at every scent. Nui, meanwhile, dashes straight through the first muddy puddle with the purest joy you could imagine. It’s messy. It’s peaceful. It’s our kind of magic.
Unexpected Discoveries Close to Home
This trail—just a short drive from home—is part of an old archaeological path we hadn’t explored before. And while I used to crave big adventures, these small discoveries with my dogs have taught me something important: you don’t need to go far to feel wonder.
I spent the afternoon slowly wandering around with them, spotting strange rocks, reading signs, and laughing every time Nui shook off a mini waterfall beside me.

Gear Spotlight!
Light, packable, and perfect for layering, this handy, protective dog shell jacket is ideal for road trips and windy, rainy, muddy conditions.
Overall vs. Jacket: What Works Best?
I was honestly excited to try out our new Hurtta Mudventure dog raincoats for the first time. They’re super lightweight and packable, so perfect for road trips or tossing in your backpack for those drizzly days when a full-on rainstorm isn’t in the forecast.
Nui’s long coat usually means she wears her Mudventure Overall if we walk in a heavy rain (which has survived years of use and still looks almost new!), but this time we went with dog rain jackets—and they worked great. They kept most of the dirt off and stayed put thanks to clever little back leg loops, even during zoomies.
If you’ve got a fluffier dog, I’d perhaps still recommend the dog rain overall for full coverage, but for cooler, damp days or light rain, these jackets are a solid option even for them. Plus, since they’re unlined and made from recycled material, they’re breathable enough for summer showers too.
The Lesson in Every Walk
I mean, dogs like Nui don’t actually care whether they would be completely covered in mud (which I can’t say for Nano :D) – they’re just happy to be out, running and exploring. And honestly? That’s been one of the biggest lessons they’ve taught me. You don’t need to go far to have an adventure.
So here’s a little reminder for you:
You don’t need a big trip. Just a couple of hours, a forest path, and a curious pup (or two).
