Camping and hiking with your dog

Hiking and travelling with your dog is a great way to spend time together. Short day trips don't need much preparation, but longer hikes are worth planning. With a few things thought out beforehand, you can both avoid surprises and concentrate on conquering new trails.

The most important thing when you are out with your dog or travelling is comfort. Just like humans, chafing and ill-fitting equipment takes the good wind out of the sails. That's why you should make sure your dog has a comfortable, well-fitting harness or collar and a leash that fits the hand of the walker. A well-fitting, ergonomic harness will feel comfortable on the dog as it moves around. A harness with a handle on the back makes it easier to control and assist the dog in challenging terrain or fast-paced situations.

For your dog's leash, choose one that is lightweight but suitable for your taste. A padded handle feels comfortable in the hand on a hike or long trek. Reflectors make it easier to see your dog in the dark in town, at road crossings or when walking in the woods with a headlamp. Remember that, with few exceptions, dogs should be on a lead almost everywhere, especially in national parks and other nature reserves.
