A Dog-Friendly Hike in Slovenia

A Long-Awaited Trail Adventure

I’d had this hike on my list for ages, and with a sunny May weekend ahead, we finally made it happen—Kofce Hut, here we come. It’s just a 40-minute drive from Ljubljana (the capital of Slovenia), which makes it the perfect little day trip when you’re craving fresh alpine air and a good dose of leg burn. And trust me, you’ll get both.

Gearing Up the Dogs

Before hitting the trail, we geared up the dogs with their Hurtta Expedition Pack ECO dog backpack. I’ve been a fan of this setup since we got them—both dogs carry their own essentials (snacks, water bowl, poop bags), and I don’t have to pack everything in my own bag anymore. I wore the Hurtta Expedition Belt eco with the Multilong dog Leash, which basically means I get to hike hands-free AND take photos, even with two dogs zig-zagging in excitement. Honestly, game-changer.

Gear Up for Mountain Hikes!

The Expedition Pack ECO is a lightweight, waterproof dog backpack made from 100% recycled materials. Perfect for daily dog walks, runs, or hikes, it features two zippered pockets for carrying essentials like treats, poop bags, or a water bottle.

With adjustable straps for a secure fit, a built-in handle for control, and reflective details for visibility. Expedition Pack Eco is designed for comfort, safety, and convenience. This dog backpack is available in sizes S–L (4–20 dl capacity). Keep loads under 10% of your dog’s weight.

The Hike to Kofce Hut

The trail to the hut is about 3 km one way—short, but with around 600 meters of elevation, it’s no stroll in the park. It starts off gently on a gravel road, but gets steep in parts, so expect to earn your lunch. Nui, as usual, forgot she’s a Border Collie and not a sled dog, pulling like we’re on some kind of alpine mission. Nano paced himself like a gentleman, as he usually does.

Alpine Views and Well-Earned Treats

Towards the end, the trail opens up into beautiful alpine meadows, with Kofce Hut sitting in the middle like a reward. And then came the real reward: štruklji. These traditional Slovenian dumplings are a must-try—mine was made with buckwheat dough and filled with raspberry and chocolate. Yes, it’s as good as it sounds!

The dogs had their snack break and rest too, while we all took in the views (and caught our breath), before heading back down. I can’t wait to go hiking with them again!

Gear That Made It Better

Expedition Pack ECO:

These are light, ergonomic, and super practical for trail days. The strong back handle is super handy for lifting the dogs over rocky sections or steep steps. The packs themselves have waterproof surface fabrics, which means they handle mud and weather like champs while keeping the essentials dry. And just like all Hurtta ECO gear, they’re made with strong, earth-friendly 100% recycled polyester—built to last, without leaving a heavy footprint.

Expedition Belt ECO:

My go-to for hands-free adventures. It fits comfortably, has pockets for my phone, keys, and my own snacks, and I use it for way more than just hiking—it's perfect for canicross, ski touring, and even quick runs with the dogs. It’s soft, stays in place, doesn’t chafe, and gives me full freedom of movement. I’ve tried belts from other brands, and this one is my favorite by far!

Multilong Leash ECO:

Honestly, a game changer. The carabiners at both ends and adjustable length make it easy to handle both dogs at once without tangling. It’s lightweight yet durable, made from—you guessed it—100% recycled polyester, and has thoughtful features like detachable reflectors and a cushioned design that works well even on longer hikes.
