What are the most important measurements for choosing a coat and overall for a dog?
When selecting a coat or overall for a dog, the most important measurement is the dog's back length, which is measured from the withers to the base of the tail. You will also find a size chart for each product to compare with other measurements you've taken from your dog. When choosing an overall, it’s also advisable to measure the dog's chest circumference and leg lengths to ensure the right size.
Written instructions and videos for measuring your dog are available on our website here.
What are the key measurements for choosing a harness for a dog?
The most important measurement when choosing a harness is the dog's chest circumference. This measurement is taken around the widest part of the dog's ribcage just behind the front legs. If the dog has thick fur, it’s recommended to compress the fur while measuring. You will find a size chart for each product to compare with other measurements you've taken from your dog.

What are the differences between the Hurtta dog raincoats?
Our collection features two models of dog raincoats: the Hurtta Mudventure Coat ECO and the Hurtta Monsoon Coat II ECO. The measurements and fit of the dog coats are very similar, but the Monsoon Coat II ECO has a wider size range and thicker shell fabric. The Monsoon Coat II ECO also includes a lining that the Mudventure Coat ECO does not have. There is also differences in the number of reflectors, which are more in Monsoon Coat II ECO.
For a more detailed comparison between the two rain coats, read our product FAQ here.
What is the difference between a dog raincoat and an overall?
A raincoat protects the dog’s back, neck, and collar, as well as the belly. An overall has sleeves that protect the dog’s legs, as well as offering better protection for the armpits and belly compared to a dog coat. If a dog has a long or soft coat, or if it’s necessary to keep the dog as dry as possible, we recommend an overall, which offers better protection from getting wet than just a raincoat.
What is a good Hurtta dog product for autumn?
For autumn rains, a good option is a dog raincoat or overall. For cool and dry autumn days, the best choice is a midlayer product that protects and warms the dog. For example, our jacket midlayers, the Warming Midlayer ECO or the Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer, or our overall midlayers the Midlayer Overall or Body Warmer which also protect the legs. For rainy, windy, and cold weather, it’s best to combine a midlayer with a dog rain product to create a lighter but warm and weather-resistant outfit. Read more about layering from our article here.
Can Hurtta midlayer dog products be worn under rain or winter jackets?
Hurtta midlayer products are designed and sized to be worn under rain or winter jackets or overalls. They have a slightly more fitted and narrower cut, which makes them comfortable for the dog and works well when worn under another product to provide additional warmth. Read more about layering from our article here.
Can the Hurtta Warming Midlayer ECO be worn under the Extreme Warmer or Extreme Overall?
The Warming Midlayer ECO dog jacket can also be worn under the Extreme Warmer III ECO winter jacket and Extreme Overall. The foil lining in the products reflects the dog’s body heat back to the dog, even when wearing a midlayer thermal product underneath.
What are the key differences between the Hurtta dog winter jackets?
Our collection includes two padded dog jackets: the Expedition Parka and the Extreme Warmer III ECO. The Expedition Parka is a traditional dog winter jacket with a wider size range than the Extreme Warmer III ECO. The Expedition Parka protects the dog’s most important muscle groups and neck. Additionally, the fabric of the Expedition Parka is more durable than that of the Extreme Warmer III ECO.
The Extreme Warmer III ECO dog winter jacket is our most protective and warmest jacket model. It has a more protective front and back hem compared to the Expedition Parka, as well as a high knit hood that can cover the dog’s neck and ears if necessary. The lining of the Extreme Warmer III ECO jacket has a foil print that reflects the dog’s body heat back to them, making the jacket even warmer. This dog jacket is designed specifically for cold northern climates, for warming up and recovery for sporting dogs, as well as for senior dogs and other cold-sensitive dogs.
What are the differences between a dog winter jacket and an overall?
A winter jacket protects and warms the dog’s most important muscle groups, back, neck, and belly. An overall also has legs that protect the dog’s legs and, in addition, provides better protection for the armpits and belly. If a dog is sensitive to the cold, has short fur, or is completely hairless, an overall provides better protection and warmth than a dog jacket.
Should the dog’s harness be worn underneath or over clothes?
We recommend putting the dog’s harness underneath clothing that has an opening for attaching the leash. This keeps the dog harness dry in rainy weather and prevents it from getting dirty easily. Additionally, this way the fit of the dog harness does not need to be adjusted separately when wearing or not wearing clothing.
Hurtta midlayer dog products are designed to be worn under another jacket, so their fit is snug and they do not have a separate harness opening. With these products, it is recommended to wear the harness over the clothing.
What are the best Hurtta products for visibility in the dark for dogs?
Reflectors in dog products ensure good visibility in the dark. The Hurtta range includes the Mudventure Reflective dog jacket, made of fully reflective fabric. It is similar in style to the Mudventure Coat ECO, but because it is made of fully reflective fabric, the dog is easily noticed from all directions. Our selection also includes a dog high visibility scarf and a reflective dog high visibility vest. Both products feature printed fabric with plenty of reflectors, making the dog easily visible in the dark. Additionally, we have Hurtta Weekend Warrior Neon dog harness with large reflective prints to enhance visibility in low light.
What are the best Hurtta products for long-haired dogs?
For long-haired dogs, the best products from Hurtta are those that protect the fur and home. For example, the Hurtta Mudventure Overall dog rain suit protects not only the dog's long fur from getting wet and dirty but also helps keep the home clean if the dog is not bathed after every muddy outing. Otherwise, long-haired and thick-coated dogs can wear most of Hurtta’s products, but for many dogs, the Expedition Parka is sufficient for protection in freezing weather, as their fur keeps them warmer than short-haired dogs. Some dogs can also manage with a raincoat well into early winter, as the raincoat protects them from rain and wind while their thick and long fur keeps them warm.
What are the best Hurtta products for short-haired dogs?
Short-haired dogs are often easier to dry after rainy weather than long-haired dogs. Often, dirt can be wiped off the dog with a towel, so short-haired dogs usually manage well with the protection a raincoat offers in wet weather. In cool autumn weather, it’s good to dress a short-haired dog in a Midlayer product for protection against the cold, and if the weather is windy and rainy, it’s advisable to wear a dog raincoat on top for extra protection. In winter, short-haired dogs often feel the cold more than long-haired dogs. Therefore, a thermal overall or the Extreme Warmer III ECO dog jacket are often good options for short-haired dogs. Layering is also a good idea during the harshest winter frosts, where a Midlayer Overall or Warming Midlayer ECO can be worn underneath a winter jacket or Extreme Overall.
What are the best Hurtta products for short-legged and long-backed dogs?
Hurtta's collection includes products specially developed for dachshunds, such as the Expedition Parka and Monsoon Coat II ECO, identifiable by the XS size marking in the size name. The sizing of these products takes into account the body shape of dachshunds: short legs, long back, deep chest, and narrow waist. For this reason, many short-legged and long-backed dogs, including some terriers and corgis, often fit better in products made with standard sizing rather than XS sizing.
What should be considered when washing and maintaining dog products?
Each product's washing instructions can be found on the care label inside the product, which also includes the size marking. We recommend following the care and washing instructions for the product to ensure it lasts as long as possible. Some dog products are recommended for hand washing due to heavy metal parts or foil print linings.
We have also compiled a comprehensive guide on washing and care instructions on our website, which includes tips for odor removal.
